The Radical Duke: Thomas Paine, the Duke of Richmond, and the Revolution that Wasn’t Norton book journal CV OA GS needs review

688Book under Contract (Norton).689The Radical Duke: Thomas Paine, the Duke of Richmond, and the Revolution that Wasn’t.690In the summer of 2015, my research team came across a parchment manuscript of the Declaration691of Independence previously unknown to researchers. The only other parchment manuscript of the692Declaration is the one encased in the National Archives in D.C. The one we found, however, was in693a small record office in southern England. It turns out to be a key that unlocks an extraordinary694story about the Third Duke of Richmond, who owned the parchment. The third Duke of Richmond695has been called the “Radical Duke,” because he was the first British peer to support the Americans,696to recommend recognizing the new nation, and making peace. He most likely received the697Declaration in the context of efforts by radicals like Thomas Paine and his associates to recruit him698to the cause of revolution in England in the late 1780s and early 1790s. The Radical Duke: Thomas699Paine, the Duke of Richmond, and the Revolution that Wasn’t narrates the story of how the Duke of700Richmond walked up to the abyss of revolution, and blinked. In the end the radicals failed to recruit701the Duke to be England’s George Washington or Marquis de Lafayette. Lafayette was gifted a702special copy of the Declaration by the Americans; Washington was gifted the key to the Bastille.703Richmond, too, was the recipient of a revolutionary talisman. Unlike Lafayette and Washington,704however, he did not proudly display his talisman in his “cabinet” as they did. Instead, he buried it in705his legal papers, with property deeds and chartering deeds for the City of Chichester in Sussex. His706radical activity had always involved some element of secrecy and closeting, and after he repudiated707erstwhile colleagues in the sedition trials and left political office in 1794, he buried his radical past708completely. When he died, he left his political papers to his illegitimate daughter and asked that she709return letters to their senders or destroy them. The story of “the Duke of Richmond, Thomas Paine,710and the Revolution that Wasn’t,” has the pleasures of a mystery, provides a new context for711thinking about the American Revolution by revealing its transatlantic impact, adds an important712chapter to the life of Thomas Paine, and reveals yet another fascinating facet of the rich life of the713Declaration of Independence in the public imagination of many countries over nearly two and a half714centuries.
