2018 Social Science Fictions: Alien Campus, Novel Worlds Columbia University Press book CV OA GS

CV span

lines 40–49 · CV · in_progress

40Social Science Fictions: Alien Campus, Novel Worlds41(in preparation, solicited by Columbia University Press)42Social Science Fictions shows how sci-fi went from being considered escapist43juvenilia at the dawn of the twentieth century to becoming a staple of college English44curricula and repository of social theory by the turn of the twenty-first. Drawing upon45institutional archives, conference proceedings, syllabi, fan zines, publishing history, and46readings of novels both cult and canonical, the project reconstructs the institutionalization4748of sci-fi as an object of legitimate scholarly attention as sci-fi itself became increasingly49obsessed with the campus as perhaps the most alien world of all.

Pulp Sexology: Paperback Revolution, Gay Liberation Duke University Press book CV OA GS

CV span

lines 26–38 · CV · in_progress

26Pulp Sexology: Paperback Revolution, Gay Liberation27(in preparation, solicited by Duke University Press for Theory Q series)28Pulp Sexology is a literary history of the human sciences. It uncovers the imprint29of the quantitative turn in mid-century American sexology exemplified by the Kinsey30Reports on the literary production of the postwar period. As advances in statistics and31computing empowered numbers with a new representational purchase, members of the32literary elite expressed panic over the fate of the novel, while sexual minorities, all too33accustomed to being treated as data, found in this state of affairs new possibilities and34perils for representing themselves. Combining archival research with approaches from35history of science, cultural studies, and sexuality studies, Pulp Sexology enters the critical36conversation about the relationships between genre and literary fiction, middlebrow and37minority literatures, by centering the contested representational protocols of the human38sciences.

Samuel R. Delany and Joanna Russ: Selected Correspondence, 1968-1998 Columbia University Press edited volume CV OA GS needs review

lines 51–69 · CV · unverified · in_progress

51Samuel R. Delany and Joanna Russ: Selected Correspondence, 1968-199852(co-edited with Alec Pollak with co-authored critical introduction, foreword by Samuel53R. Delany, solicited by Columbia University Press)54This collection, featuring an original foreword by Samuel R. Delany, will put the55correspondence between Delany (1942- ) and Joanna Russ (1937-2011) into print for the56first time. Their letters chronicle the decades-long camaraderie, critical commentary, and57prodigious writing practices of two of the most influential queer science fiction authors of58the 20th century and beyond. Writing one another nearly every day, their correspondence59is a rich archive of the working life of the science fiction writer in the heady days of the60emergent New Wave and the movements for Black, gay, and women’s liberation, as well61as a chastening chronicle of the immiserating working conditions of adjunct faculty62attempting to make a living teaching the topics that matter. They discuss their own works63in progress and reflect on the writing of their many notable peers—Philip K. Dick, Ursula64Le Guin, Marilyn Hacker, Octavia Butler, James Tiptree Jr., Andrea Dworkin, Lillian65Faderman, and others. The volume is necessarily a selection of letters, as the total page66count for their correspondence numbers in the many thousands. Totaling approximately67350 pages, the volume will include a photographic insert of a selection of Delany’s letters68featuring his signature compositional style, typed on found paper products making69creative use of margins, and signed affectionately, as ever, “Love and stuff.”
