The State and Literary Production in Early Modern Europe Yale University Press book CV OA GS needs review

CV span

lines 442–500 · CV · unverified · in_progress

442a) 'The State and Literary Production in Early Modern Europe'. Yale University Press443have asked me to write a comparative study of the relationship between different444polities (nation states and other kinds of polity, secular or ecclesial, monarchical or445republican, imperial or not) in early modern Europe and the kinds of literature446produced within them between 1500 and 1700. How did the nature of different447polities shape what was written? Does any vernacular literature have a special claim448to make, at a time when some vernaculars were gaining authority either in parts of449Europe or in other parts of the world? What capacities were retained exclusively by450Latin literature? An additional focus will be the consequences of the migrations of451both authors and texts from one part of the continent to another, or to another452continent, by force or design, in and through the wars of early modern Europe.453I see this project as a crucial contribution to English literary history: how does454it appear when compared with the history of other literary cultures, especially in the455period compassing the decline of European Latinity and the more culturally settled456world of the European vernacular literatures in the later eighteenth century and457afterwards. More than one book-length publication might well flow from this458research; my current research is focusing on a number of case studies that have a clear459connection with major aspects of English literature. I intend to publish at least one460English-foreign language parallel text with annotations of a significant work461discussed in the book (for instance Andreas Gryphius’s remarkable play on the462execution of Charles I Carolus Stuardus, oder Ermordete Majestät, a work widely463performed in the German speaking world, and built from intimate contact with464Scottish and English royalists and their books in France, Holland, northern Germany465and Poland). I have taught a course (“The State and Literary Production’) at the466Folger Shakespeare Library in Spring 2006 that established a basic structure for this467book, and continued to work on the project while on leave last year.468Prospective chapter topics are as follows:4694701. Introduction. State, Nation and International Literary Traffic in Early Modern471Europe.472Reformation, humanism, heterodoxy, mysticism and poetry in the Italian473states, Poland, the German states, Sweden, the Netherlands and England.474Socinus, Coornhert, Sarpi, Wirsung, Opitz, Anna Ovena Hoyers, Kuhlmann.4752. Theatre, Poetry and Politics in the Dutch Republic, with readings of texts by476Bredero,477Vos, Maria Roemer Visscher, P.C. Hooft, Constantijn Huyghens, Vondel.478The making of a literary culture, specifically poetry and theatre, in the Dutch479republic. The relationship between literature and philosophy in a multi-480confessional state.4813. Libertinism, Repression and the Rise of Classicism: the case of the French482libertine483poets (Théophile de Viau; Tristan l’Hermite, Saint Amant; Claude Le Petit)484and485their opposites.4864. Depicting Otherness in Monarchical and Republican London. Poetry and theatre487as488measures of regime change; the perceived virtues of English and of other489490languages between the 1630s and the 1650s.4915. Romance and Revolt; Barclay’s Argenis, Lazarillo de Tormes, Cervantes,492Literature in493the Iberian Peninsular and the Revolt of the Catalans.4946. Vernaculars and minorities: the Welsh, the Basques; the Frisians; the Jews. Uriel495da Costa, Morgan Llwyd.4967. Tragedy, Trauerspielen, the Reformation and the Rise of Absolutism. Bullinger’s497Lucretia, the Reformation and Swiss Republicanism; Gryphius’s Ermordete498Majestät; the Revolt of Naples and the European stage.499500I am at present submitting article versions of some chapters to journals.
